All of us are worthy of participating in repair

My desk calendar this year is from the artist Molly Costello – every month I am inspired by another of her works. This month, I have been inspired by the idea that “practice makes patterns, creates culture, weaves new worlds.” I am holding the question: what am I practicing? What we practice becomes what and who we are. If we practice complaining, we become good at it. If we practice patience, we become good at it. I am trying to make it a practice – something I do with a kind of mindful intention – to drink water (with the hope of becoming more hydrated and less desiccated a being). My partner is experimenting with a 30 day journalling practice. (I didn’t even suggest it. Honest.)

In a recent social post, the artist explained one of my other fave pieces of hers, with this line:

All of us are worthy of participating in repair. 🕸️

Molly Costello

She said, “I knew when I started this body of work that I wanted to include at least one piece on repair and accountability, knowing that growing our skills to address harm in our communities is an essential part of building a world without police and prisons. With this piece I was really thinking about the two hands of this work, both the personal responsibility of stepping into accountability for our actions as well as the role our communities play in holding someone in their process to address harm.

What will it feel like in the future, when all of us have the time, the spaciousness, skills and resources to support each other when we cause harm in ways that don’t create more harm? Or when we ourselves are harmed we feel the full support of our well resourced networks to work toward true, deep healing.

A few months after I finished this piece I was listening to an interview with Kate Deciccio @k8deciccio on Broken Boxes Podcast @brokenboxespodcast and just loved this quote from her!!! I felt like it really communicated what I was exploring in this piece and she has graciously allowed me to reshare it.”

I love Molly’s work, and I love this quote and wanted to lift it up. “All of us are worthy of participating in repair.” Don’t think otherwise. Just start a practice. And see what it makes. ❤
