After receiving a Letter of Non-Compliance from the BC Conservation Officer Service about the bear conflict created by the memorial crabapples planted along Portage Road, the Village of Pemberton has advised that the trees will be cut down, with non-fruit bearing trees to be planted in their stead.
Despite the success of Stewardship Pemberton’s Crabapple Project and efforts to remove the fruit, bear activity in this area has increased due to the habitual nature of our area bears. This in turn has resulted an increase in human wildlife conflicts and safety concerns for residents and students walking to and from school.
Tree removal will commence in April. Tree replacement will commence shortly after removal in May. To offset the costs of the tree replacement, the Village applied for, and received funding from Tree Canada/BC Hydro Fund.
