UPDATED: Winterfest is coming. (With fireworks! And the Hairfarmers!) But NO POLAR BEAR PLUNGE. It’s too treacherously slick at One Mile Lake.

Well, I admit I was wondering how the Polar Bear swim was going to go, back when everything, including my eyelashes, were frozen solid. Pineapple Express seems to have taken care of that…

The genius organizers (I’m talking to you, Carlee Cindric), got a jump on the weather changes by hosting last weekend’s pop-up Winterfest at One Mile Lake, making a disco ball my outdoor set decoration of choice.

And they continue demonstrating their agility, adapting to changing conditions (hey, that’s winter) – announcing last night that the Polar Bear Plunge (and associated lake activities on Sunday January 22) will be cancelled this year, because conditions at One Mile Lake and parking lot are so slick and treacherous (for anyone not wearing crampons and carrying an ice-axe), that the Village of Pemberton has closed One Mile Lake.

Winterfest organizers apologise for the disappointment, but state that the safety of their participants, vendors, volunteers and crew is their first priority.

So focus your energies on the action on January 20 and 21 at the Downtown Barn and have a great time.

So, this weekend, the Polar Bear Plunge will take place at One Mile Lake on Sunday, January 22, but All the other action centres around the Downtown Barn. Check out the schedule – there’s a ton of creative, fun, events planned.

So pull out your galoshes (or your dancing shoes) and good times will roll.

Because Winterfest is as much about defying the weather, as celebrating it.
