Meet you at Mudfest? Musical Fundraiser plays up love, support and tunes for Birken neighbours, October 3

When a Birken family is in distress, the Birken community steps up to help.

Mudfest on Saturday, October 3 at Willowcraft Farm is a fundraiser in support of the people who have lost their homes and belongings as a result of the recent area mudslide.

All are welcome, no matter where you live.

Mudfest offers live musical performances by bands, acoustic acts and DJs, a couple of jam sessions, food, on-site camping, a silent auction and… mud wrestling.

Entry is by donation and all proceeds will be donated to the people affected by the mudslide. Mike Rogers, event host, is a long-time local. His family received similar community support when his wife was undergoing alternative treatments for breast cancer.

“This setup was initiated ten years ago when Cath was sick,” Roger said. “The community came together and built a stage and worked to produce a fundraising event for us. Keeping with that legacy I think it’s important in hosting it here. So many people helped out. It’s good to give back.”

Musicians in support include the Shunpikers, Kalan Wi, Grouper Soup (Phil, Mike and Tom from the Hairfarmers/A Whole Lotta Led), Papa Josh, D’ale and the Coolers, Geoff Pross, The Foggy Mountain Boys, DJ Phroh and Miss Kosmik. Gates open at noon and the music plays from 2:00 pm to 2:00 am.

Silent auction items are being accepted until 2:00 pm on Friday October 2 and Mudfest organizers are still seeking a few daytime volunteers. More info is at

Roger suggests a $20 entry donation.

Willowcraft Farm is at 8946 Portage Road, just north of Poole Creek Road and ten minutes south of Gates Lake. The event will be held rain or shine (though it looks like shine!). There are plenty of amenities, parking spots and dry cover. Kids are welcome and must be accompanied by adults; dogs are not permitted on the farm.
