Wellness Challenge: Less is More


Today is Day 27 of the #50DayWellnessChallenge (if you started on October 3 and plan to end it with a grand celebration of live demos, awards and a Slow Food inspired feast at the Wellness Gathering on November 22.)  (Of course, you might, like me, have lost count, had to start over part way through, have started late… it’s all good. It’s a rolling invitation. In that department, I draw deep inspiration from an ultra-endurance athlete I interviewed recently. Kevin Calder-Becker has just turned 50 and is on his way to Hawaii to compete in Ultraman, a seriously intense “triathlon” that is more than double the length of an Ironman. For the second time. It’s 36 hours of competition over 3 days. I asked him what advice he has for people wanting to get up off the couch… remembering that 15 years ago, he got started on his path because he’d quit smoking, packed on 65 pounds and didn’t want to be that way.  Here’s what he said.

  1. Always have a goal. Always put something on your agenda, so you have a goal, so you’re not just training for nothing. So, set a goal,

  2. Have fun. Laugh.

  3. And finally, don’t be so hard on yourself. We’re not all perfect. Forgive yourself. It’s okay to have a bad day. So let it go.
