Victoria explained, when she submitted this photo, that she was playing with the idea of perspective. Looks like a lake. But it was really a puddle. This is what my three year old is trying to teach me on a regular basis. Puddle. Lake. Hassle. Blessing. It's all in how you look at it.

Shayla Wallace keeps an eye on the sky
I have family out east, who say they feel claustrophobic in the mountains - they like the wide skies of their flatland home. I'm sympathetic. But I like these mountains that hold up our sky. And the glimpses of sky and all its drama and glory. Thanks to Shayla Wallace for her ongoing Saturday posts. … Continue reading Shayla Wallace keeps an eye on the sky
The Blanket Ceremony at Signal Hill
Last week, I met with Clare Hanbury, the Vice Principal at Signal Hill, and Tanina Williams, an Aboriginal cultural support worker, to hear about a Blanket Ceremony I'd caught a glimpse of via Facebook. More about that tomorrow. I'm so thrilled Clare agreed to write about that incredible initiative for the Wellness Almanac, and look forward … Continue reading The Blanket Ceremony at Signal Hill
Cloud watching with Victoria Saddleman
I have big love in my heart for the first two girls to have agreed to takeover the Wellness Almanac's instagram account. It's always hard to be first. It takes courage. The fact they're such talented photographers helped kick off our project and now that we're hosting guestagrammer #8, Meghan Barton, I feel the momentum … Continue reading Cloud watching with Victoria Saddleman
Take a hike, with Shayla Wallace, our newest photo contributor
I wish it didn't end. That's the feedback we're happy to receive from the Wellness Almanac's intagram takeover project - from followers and from photographers. Shayla Wallace took over the account from April 24 - May 1: I couldn’t help but feel amazed by how many people I’ve reached. There has always been a deep … Continue reading Take a hike, with Shayla Wallace, our newest photo contributor
What evidence of Lil’wat’s deep history in this territory means to me
I love Johnny Jones' facebook page for inspiration. His work takes him all over Lil'wat territory, and when he posts things like the photo above, with the spare caption: "medicine man with pipe and the lightning for his power, as the people do the bear dance above him", some little section of my brain lights … Continue reading What evidence of Lil’wat’s deep history in this territory means to me
Shayla Wallace recaps her Wellness Almanac takeover
When Shayla Wallace posted this photo to the Mt Currie Photography facebook page, I felt my usual flash of awe for people who are amazing at photography, and then looked a little closer. "What, did you sit in the creek to get that shot?" "Actually, yes. It was freezing." That level of dedication in a … Continue reading Shayla Wallace recaps her Wellness Almanac takeover
Breaking News: Carbon dating establishes Lil’wat settlement to be 5500 years old
I read two incredible longform articles this year that both referenced the renewed appreciation scientists have for the oral stories for First Nations - the way those long-ago stories are checking out in the geological record, providing clues and adding evidence to theories about massive events that we don't have computer records of. Check them … Continue reading Breaking News: Carbon dating establishes Lil’wat settlement to be 5500 years old

How to be brave, with Victoria Saddleman
Victoria Saddleman was the second person to step up as our guestagrammer on the Wellness Almanac's instagram account. Did she know what I was asking of her? Well, I hardly knew what I was asking of people. It was kind of a "jump in and see how the water seems" invitation. So, she did. Can … Continue reading How to be brave, with Victoria Saddleman
