#WellnessReads: Danielle Saul reviews All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
I joined a book club. It's making me a kinder, smarter person, actually. Proof in this article that reveals recent scientific evidence that reading fiction increases empathy. Despite being a lifelong book nerd, I fell away from fiction for almost a decade. I think there's something about the pace, some fundamental slowing down required by … Continue reading #WellnessReads: Danielle Saul reviews All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
Column: Plant Some Seeds
So, here’s my problem. I went to the h’OMgrown Fest in Pemberton this weekend thinking I’d be able to spin a column out of a seminar — maybe bang out a listicle, offer up some bullet-point worthy wellness wisdom about yoga, family life, staying sane. Simple! How was I to know that I’d spend two … Continue reading Column: Plant Some Seeds
Get to know your Garbage
I read about this guy who was trying to live with no impact. Most media, when his year-long adventure blew up, were obsessed with finding out what he used instead of toilet paper. But I was stuck on something a little more upper-shelf in the bathroom stakes. Does a hard-core no-impacter environmentalist floss? Re-use their … Continue reading Get to know your Garbage

Pemberton Community Weed Pull, Wed June 17, 3:30pm, Arn Canal
I cannot even tell you how therapeutic I find weeding. Imagine a weeding-mob?! Imagine a whole crew of you, gloves-on, refreshment-fuelled, ripping up weeds and invasive species, en masse? Well, you don't have to imagine it. You can just show up. Meet at the covered bridge by Highway 99 on the Arn Canal (that's the … Continue reading Pemberton Community Weed Pull, Wed June 17, 3:30pm, Arn Canal
How to secure your event’s Sign space at the downtown Pemberton roundabout
It can be tricky spreading the word about an upcoming event, and without a doubt, the most prime real estate (imagine a marriage proposal?!?) is the Village of Pemberton's sign at the roundabout. Demand is high (and that's even without marriage proposals or 40th birthday announcements), so the Village has adopted a slightly more rigorous … Continue reading How to secure your event’s Sign space at the downtown Pemberton roundabout

Come count birds. The Breeding Bird Survey Day is Saturday June 13.
Happy report from our birding correspondent, John Tschopp: the Western Screech Owl, which was found at One Mile lake, is back out in the wilds again. With the help of Brenda Lloyd and others it spent some weeks at Owl Rehab in Delta. Last week it was found to be fit for release. It was … Continue reading Come count birds.
