SPS will be partnering up with community organizations to help reduce human-bear conflict in our area through harvesting the crab apples along the main street in Pemberton.
These mature trees, which were planted in honour and memory of local veterans and community members, while beautiful, attract black bears into our town each fall.
Bears that become conditioned to accessing human food sources in urban areas are at higher risk of being killed (or relocated) due to human-bear conflict and public safety concerns.
SPS aims to remove the attractant – taking the fruit to the Pemberton Community Centre kitchen where it will be turned into stunning seasonal crab apple sauce and jelly to be taken home by volunteers, and sold at local markets.
This dynamic and innovative project educates on many levels: the importance of managing bear attractants; how we can better co-exist with bears; the importance of healthy and local eating; food security; AND food preservation techniques (we will be canning the sauce and jelly).
Interested? We need your help! Please e-mail stewardshippemberton@gmail.com or call Dawn at 604 698 5686 to volunteer for a day or two, lead a group of volunteers, or donate your canning jars you don’t use and are just taking up space!
Thanks to the Squamish Climate Action Network, VoP, PVUS and the Community Foundation of Whistler for your support!
