One of the first native flowers to emerge after the snow melts around Pemberton is the chocolate lily (Fritillaria lanceolata). This springtime beauty is found in grassy meadows, bluffs, and open forests. Anyone who has been biking with me at this time of year has experienced multiple and sudden (sometimes dangerous?) stops when I first spot them.
The bulb of this plant was an important traditional food source for many First Nations. A great place to go and look for this lily is at the base of Happy Trail. It is also found in abundance in the Mosquito Lake area near Mr. Rogers and Econoline trails. In recent years, this species has become more rare – so please remember not to disturb this plant.
Like many other forest flowers, the chocolate lily reminds us of the incredible, limitless beauty and abundance found in nature.
