The Recognition Awards were born out of a desire to recognize the individuals and organizations that work tirelessly – and often behind the scenes – making our communities stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
This is our 4th year doing this and each year we are amazed by the commitment, passion, and contribution of so many people that are nominated. And this year is no exception.
This year we had 40 nominations. Huge response. And all very deserving. We want to celebrate you even more than we can in just one day. So over the coming months we will do profiles of each nominee on the Wellness Almanac. (All the 2013 nominees are listed here.)
Congratulations to the 2013 winners of a Winds of Change Recognition Award.
Strengthening Individual or Community Resilience Through the Provision of Health or Community Service: Pemberton Youth Centre – Geoff Pross
The Youth Centre is open for teens and provides an alternative to being on the street or at private homes unsupervised. It’s a venue to engage youth and guide them to productive social relationship and opportunities for personal empowerment. An example is the 2 year Seed to Table project spearheaded by Geoff that gives youth the opportuntity to increase their skills in leadership, food safety, nutrition and job building skills.
“Geoff embodies the spirit of Winds of Change. He has worked with youth from Mount Currie, Pemberton and surrounding areas for many years. Geoff has been a role model and mentor for many of our communities youth. Many families have had Geoff’s help in guiding our children through their teen years. Geoff in particular has a great way of focusing on the strengths of the youth rather than the weaknesses. Building on the childs strengths to build self-confidence.”
Exemplifying Community Caring and Responsibility: Dean Nelson
Dean is a teacher at Xit’olcw Community School in Mount Currie. He is also on his second term with Lil’wat Chief and Council. The nominations for Dean were unabashedly glowing – and many. Dean was commended for being a role model to so many youth in Mount Currie by living a healthy lifestyle and always working towards what is best for the youth in the community. He is clearly an advocate and a friend to many. But it is also his passion and tireless efforts to work with and involve youth in positive experiences that so many people commented on.
“Dean is a hero to me…and he deserves to be recognized.”
Bringing People & Communities Together in the Spirit of Collaboration and Cooperation: Pemberton Youth Soccer Association, and, Mount Currie Youth Soccer – Brett Wallace
Brett Wallace is the driving force behind Mount Currie Youth Soccer and so many people wanted that to be recognized and celebrated. Brett volunteers year round to coach and manage youth soccer teams. Last year he coached 4 teams himself. He organizes practices that enhance the skills and health of the youth. He also brings the teams to weekend tournaments and teaches sportsmanship and the importance of friendship with other community teams. Brett has an average of 80-100 kids that he coaches each year.
In Pemberton, youth benefit from the Pemberton Youth Soccer Association. PYSA is a long standing community program providing children, youth and families in the area with an affordable option for an active, healthy lifestyle while gaining experience and skills not only in soccer but also being involved in leadership, teamwork and social skills. Many children develop strong bonds and go on to enjoy the sport through out their lives. The program provides traning opportunities for parents and encourages volunteerism. This is a well developed program with a membership of over 200 kids, coaches, board members, referees and volunteers. In fact PYSA may be the largest volunteer organization in Pemberton.
