The bravest day of the year

July 5, 2016July 2, 20169 Comments

Signal Hill has one of the highest ratios of aboriginal students in the province - 40% of the elementary age kids come from a First Nations background. That means, two out of every five kids in the school come from a culture for whom school is not a safe place – not a refuge … Continue reading The bravest day of the year

kerry-It should come as no surprise that we love food. This love translates from seed to fruit to harvest. Once we're harvesting we also start connecting with our community through our food. Whether it's sharing recipes, sharing a meal, admiring the beauty of a perfect 🍅, creating veggie art in our csa or market display, the food we grow both inspires us and connects us to this place and the people here. The community that supports us and other local farms offer us a chance to run a healthy business and we offer direct connection to healthy food in exchange. Food is another common connection we all share daily in the journey of wellness. To quote Michael Pollan “The shared meal elevates eating from a mechanical process of fueling the body to a ritual of family and community, from the mere animal biology to an act of culture.” #laughingcrowtakover #commonthreads #fortheloveoffood #localeats #smallfarmsfeedlocalcommunities #knowyourfarmers #foodconnection #communitywellness
One of my most favorite times of year is melon season, the Pemberton 🍉 hold a very special place in my heart. we use three indicators to help us determine ripeness but the most fun of these indicators is the slap or tap test. Listen & scroll for videos of Budgie and the crew having fun with melons. #laughingcrowtakover #melontesting #musicalfood #summerdreamingonacoldday #localflavor #summereats
I guess at first ski touring was meant to be about pow hunting and shredding, but in time I realized that I was  just as much into it for the wandering around in the woods with pals chatting about all of the things. It’s so great to get out and do these things.  Friends, a workout, fresh air and fresh snow! This is my buddy Ian.. he had his “tired legs” gene removed at birth, they replaced it with a pow compass feature that makes him never lost and destined to nearly always find good snow even in the most challenging conditions. Was sweet that he towed my dead snowmobile out of the mountains yesterday as well.  Phew!. This sled from back in the day never gave us hassles like this! #kingputt #wherewasthecompasslastsunday! #laughingcrowtakeover
In November we didn't get around to packing all this stuff up and putting it in the shop.... Looking at this now I have to wonder why we ever bothered all those other years?! Exactly where they need to be in May. Two trips back and forth from the field saved! Win! Kkawww! #laughingcrowtakeover
Notebooks and checklists are huge contributors to my daily sense of feeling well.  I start every day with a list. This list usually starts with the task of “Create a list”.. I check this off immediately.  Progress. Every task has a box and I relish in checking these boxes. Progress feels just great and checklists are a way of reminding yourself of it, defining and maybe even measuring parts of the progress. Some people scratch out tasks other folks check boxes. I am def a box checker. It's the best. In winter I try to include a couple fun activities and communications with friends on my lists to remind myself that these also are priorities. "xc ski @thebeerfarmers ". These tasks can somehow be easily forgotten once the farm starts to get real needy. My notebook goes everywhere I go… In the spring/summer I tie it to myself with a rope, i’m lost without it and it loves to hide.  In summer I tie everything to me. @purplepitchfork , this notebook obsession is your doing. The farm community misses you. And now… I can check -Wellness post- off my list.  Progress... #laughingcrowtakeover
Budgie :This instagram feed is pure magic!  I’ve mostly eaten up my self-allotted time for creating this post by reading back through everyone else's effort.  I’ve been back there for quite awhile now. I encourage anyone to read a few, or all of these takeovers from beginning to end.  Start with the selfie and move forward! It was in doing this that I really began to appreciate what kind of window Lisa was encouraging people to open.  It’s so great. Sooooo... Too much time to has been spent reading here, and I need to move on to my daily farm lists.  I’ll save my attempt to distill “wellness” into language for another day. I suspect this might take a fair bit of mental throttle and that’s always best for me earlier in the morning. Have a great day... May you all check many boxes on your daily lists today !!#laughingcrowtakeover
