A little bit owl, a little bit hawk: Northern Harrier in the ‘hood

“eagle-eyed” John Tschopp spotted a northern harrier last Monday late in the afternoon while it was catching mice.

Hawks 006

When it was perched on a fence post, I  realized how owl-like some of its features are. It was already quite dark, not the best picture. It looks like a cross between an owl and a hawk. Some of its habits are owlish. Body and legs are hawk like. It was still flying in the dark, when my bright binos couldn’t spot it any more

The Northern Harrier has long been a favorite raptor to observe. Their low flying erractic pattern as they are hunting over open fields is an amazing site to see. Thank you for sharing the photo too.
