The action starts at 11:00am on Saturday with the Nimby 50 bike race. This epic cross country mountain bike race race has become a fast favourite with some of the best riders in Canada, and this year’s event will not disappoint. There is a new section in the Mosquito Lake area, and a revised route to the finish at North Arm Farm.
Grab your cowbells, whistles, pots and pans and come on out to cheer on the racers. Overnight Sensation is the timed downhill section and promises some serious thrills. Another excellent spot to line the trail is lower down just where Lower Moosejah crosses the Mackenzie FSR. It’s a short walk from the gravel parking area at the Plateau. On the uphill side there is a flowy section with some sweet jumps. Riders pass this sections twice, the first time around 11:15, then again at the end of the race between 1- 3pm. The awards ceremony will be at the North Arm Farm at 3:45. Bring the family to cheer on the competitors and stick around for BBQ, beer and music at the after party.
On June 8 make sure you check out the Rick Hansen Hooves in Motion fundraiser happening at Copper Cayuse Outfitters. The day includes trail rides, wagon rides, western BBQ and live entertainment. Every dollar donated goes to the Rick Hansen Foundation for spinal cord research.
On June 14 make sure you clear space on your social calendar for the PVTA fundraiser for the construction of a memorial trail in honour of Rudy Rozsypalek. The trail will be a singletrack on Mackenzie Ridge that will connect Middle Earth to the top of Overnight Sensation. The fundraiser is going to be at the Legion at 7:30. There will be musical entertainment, a silent auction, and raffle prizes including a night at a Tyax Adventure backcountry camp. All funds raised will go to the trail construction.
Big thanks to Mr. Hargitt’s Outdoor Class for doing such a great job rerouting and fixing up the line that extends Fat Tug along Pemberton Creek below the water tower. The new line is smooth and flowy with berms and small jumps…and it’s super fun.
If you’re in the Mile One area you’ll notice that there is a new line to bypass the steep start on Overhill. The new climbing singletrack, called Murse Maid, brings you up to the top of that rocky section where Pickle Surprise starts. From there you can continue on Overhill to hit up Dog Beach, or you can join in to the Overhill/K2 Connector up to Fizzy Pop, News Flash and beyond.
The summer will see some work on a few trails, including a grading and resurfacing of the Valley Loop between Airport Road and Highway 99, as well as two new sections of Sea to Sky trail. It’s being extended from Nairn Falls to the railway crossing, and from Wedge Woods to the Soo River crossing, meaning that there is even more dirt and less asphalt. The hiking trail up Mt Currie is a work in progress, with the lower sections mostly complete, and some upper sections only flagged at this time. Use caution if you go exploring and stay tuned for more updates.
And finally, if you haven’t picked up your new trail map you’re missing out. It looks great and has a ton of new trails on it. It’s also got some suggested hiking loops and includes distance and approximate time for the hike. To pick one up drop by the Bike Co. or the Toursim Pemberton Visitor Centre.
