24-Hour Drum Event at the Pemberton Secondary School
9am-3pm school aged children/youth
3pm-10pm – public
10pm-9am – student leaders

BY DONATION – ALL proceed towards a youth centre in Mt.Currie.

The event is open from 3:00pm to 10:00pm on Friday, May 3rd at Pemberton Secondary School (1400 Oak Street). There are special performances from Kalan Wi (a local rhyme and chant group), Alex Wells (local world renown hoop dancer), a competition pow-wow, and a variety of cultural workshops (pine needle, cedar roses, mini-drums, wool weaving and medicine bags). There also will be a concession stand serving Indian tacos and a variety of local vendor selling arts and crafts. The event is suited for all ages.

Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door.  The Pala7lhkalh Stumuxh have discovered that there are youth centres in Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton, but there is no place for youth to gather in Mt. Currie.  This is an inequality that they aim to change.  Funds raised from the event will go towards the development of a youth centre in Mt. Currie.  Students also plan to apply for grants and raise funds to reach this goal.

The event is hosted by Pala7lhkalh Stélmexw, an Aboriginal Youth Council made up of high school students from Pemberton, Squamish, Whistler and Mount Currie.

Pala7lhkalh Stélmexw means together as one, the human we strive to become.

They are actively engaged in raising awareness towards inequality issues in Canada along with a variety of other school districts and communities across British Columbia.

They are amongst several school districts hosting 24 Hour Drum events in their community on the first Friday of May – something that was spearheaded last spring, when 10 BC school districts joined Sea to Sky School District at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Center in Whistler to learn why and how to host a 24 Hour Drum in your community.

Together the youth aim to change their communities, the province of British Columbia, the nation and the world through 24 Hour Drum events.
