Bringing the Garden Inside for Winter: Sprouting

There’s a twitter experiment that caught my eye last winter, called @icheckafter. It’s basically a pledge to not roll out of bed and reach immediately for your iPhone or laptop. I realised that the first thing I do when I roll out of bed (while husband is making me coffee. Nice.) is rinse my sprouts.

My two little sprout jars sit on the kitchen counter all winter, and inject a dose of green crunchy flavour to winter sandwiches.

It is true that if you Google “how to sprout”, you will find a lot of weird hippies who seem to like talking to their computer build in cameras…

… but it is helpful to see just how easy it is, to go from this:

in the space of about 2 weeks.

I picked up my first “proper” sprouting jar, and a packet of sprouting seeds at Be Natural in downtown Pemberton. Then I added another jar from my recycling bin, with a lid made from some cheesecloth I bought at Small Potatoes for $2, so I’ve always got sprouts on the go, a winter garden in my kitchen, and a reason to get up in the morning (and NOT reach straight for my computer.)
